Griffins to kick off 2017 with a fly half that doesn’t pass
By Master Griffin | 8 March 2017
Newcastle Griffins coach Rod Beath has declared that he will start Aden Wotherspoon in the no. 10 jersey for the first round clash with Pokolbin, despite Wotherspoon’s inability to pass.
Wotherspoon, who made his debut with the Griffins last season, proved to be an excellent recruit in the inside centre position, but once moved to the more demanding role of fly half, failed to pass the ball in scoring situations. On more than one occasion he showed great ability to call for the ball and go himself, preventing certain forwards from getting off the nudie run.
Despite the overwhelming case against the man they call Spoon, and with the Griffins recruiting well for 2017, especially in the playmaker role, Coach Beath was undeterred.
“Look, he’s a former Leaguey, so he knows what to do. And when he runs himself, Spoon usually makes the metres that our forwards don’t. We don’t need him to pass the ball too often, that’s what scrum half is for.”
Wotherspoon had this to say. “Cash me outside, how bow dat?”.
He then made a Simpsons reference nobody understood and insulted someone named "Crocey". We at the Griffins Gazette did not understand the references but felt we should, so just laughed nervously.
